What is Harder?

3.8.2024

I believe more people are confident in being healed of some ailment or disease forever than they are of their sins being forgiven forever. I’m not sure when the last time I heard someone say; ‘God has taken my cancer away… until I sin again.’ Or, ‘God has allowed me to be pain free as long as I ask Him each day to keep me that way.’ It seems easier to accept healing without condition than forgiveness. But as they say, there is nothing new under the sun:

”When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.” And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, “Why does this Man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, “Why do you reason about these things in your hearts? Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, take up your bed and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic, “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” Immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went out in the presence of them all, so that all were amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”“ Mark‬ ‭2‬:‭5‬-‭12‬ ‭

We have the same question before us here. What is easier to believe- that one can be healed or forgiven? I always thought that the easier was the forgiveness part. Is it hard to say sins are forgiven? No, but it is harder to know they are forgiven because we have been mislead for so long by religion. We’ve been told that forgiveness is conditional on our constant need to repent and it only comes when we change our ways. But notice what isn’t in this story.

-the man never asked to be forgiven

-the man didn’t claim to desire to change his ways nor even acknowledge his ways were bad

-Jesus didn’t make the healing conditional on anything

-Jesus didn’t make forgiveness conditional on anything

Perhaps Jesus can and did forgive us of our sins completely.

Perhaps we have assigned conditions on forgiveness that Jesus never added

Perhaps we do have trouble accepting in faith what was given to a man who simply let his friends take him to a man who was who He said He was.
