Ticket Home

Every war features combatants that long for home. A major portion of conversation often centers on going home or at least discussing who or what they miss at home. All these soldiers want is a ticket home- away from the horrors of the war- away from the suffering and struggles. Not surprisingly, it would be hard to find anyone who didn’t want to go home.

‘Don’t be in a hurry.’ That is the response I saw from a believer to another believer who said they couldn’t wait to go to Heaven. Hmm... I’m wondering why we wouldn’t be in a hurry.

We are like those soldiers in war. We are in a constant state of struggle. Pain and suffering linger in our lives constantly and the world grows darker and darker. We are in an intense spiritual war so why would we not want go home?

I am in a hurry! I want to go to my real home and I want to go now! I want to live without pain and suffering. I want to live free from bad news and the darkness of the world. I want to get away from the hate and anger. When you know what lies ahead and realize what you have now it is easy to desire to go home, but!

But, God has me here for a purpose. I know I was created for His work;

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” Ephesians‬ ‭2:10‬ ‭

I understand what Paul meant when he discussed the desire to leave this world for his destined home;

“For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better. Nevertheless to remain in the flesh is more needful for you.” Philippians‬ ‭1:21-24‬ ‭

Notice Paul is anxious for Heaven, but he understands he can impact others according to the will of God. We need to have Paul’s attitude in life. Our longing should be for home as any good soldier has, but also like a good soldier we know that we still have a mission to accomplish before we can go home. And so I will also recall some other words of Paul that were written near the end of his life and I’ll strive to also say;

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. II Timothy‬ ‭4:7-8‬

I’m waiting for my ticket home, but while I way I will serve the Lord like a good soldier- how about you? Are you wanting to go home?

Prayer focus: those addicted to break free in the power of Christ.
