Song Writing

A song from the mid-70’s, made popular by Barry Manilow, was called ‘I Write the Songs.’  It’s about writing songs that impact people in their life.  In the Bible, we see the reverse- we see how life impacted people to write songs.  David, being the most frequent such writer.

What is amazing is the circumstances surrounding some of David’s heartfelt songs (Psalms).  For example, David was on the run from King Saul (see 1 Samuel 19-30), who was trying to kill him.  Constantly going from one place of shelter to another, he somehow wrote this;

“Be merciful to me, O God, for man would swallow me up; Fighting all day he oppresses me. My enemies would hound me all day, For there are many who fight against me, O Most High. Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God (I will praise His word), In God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me? All day they twist my words; All their thoughts are against me for evil. They gather together, They hide, they mark my steps, When they lie in wait for my life. Shall they escape by iniquity? In anger cast down the peoples, O God! You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle; Are they not in Your book? When I cry out to You, Then my enemies will turn back; This I know, because God is for me. In God (I will praise His word), In the LORD (I will praise His word), In God I have put my trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? Vows made to You are binding upon me, O God; I will render praises to You, For You have delivered my soul from death. Have You not kept my feet from falling, That I may walk before God In the light of the living?” Psalms‬ ‭56:1-13‬

You can feel the tension as David was hiding from the king, but yet, he finds it in his heart to trust God.  His circumstances are impacting the song in his heart and he puts it in writing.  I’m encouraged that in the midst of his struggles he is still able to write songs.  These are beautiful songs that can inspire us when we face struggles.  When I need hope I can read;

‭“Deliver me, O LORD, from evil men; Preserve me from violent men, Who plan evil things in their hearts; They continually gather together for war... keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; Preserve me from violent men, Who have purposed to make my steps stumble... I said to the LORD: “You are my God; Hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD. O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, You have covered my head in the day of battle.” Psalms‬ ‭140:1-2, 4, 6-7‬

I am so grateful for David and his songs, but that gets me wondering,  what about me?  What songs am I writing for others as I struggle?  Am I using my struggles to inspire others?  How about you?

Struggles can be challenging, but also great times to help inspire others by the songs we write.
