One Way

The world today is seeking many ways to do things. Books and seminars offer many ways to get rich, have success, start a business, retire early. You can find many ways to lose weight, eat heathy, build muscle. You can find many ways to relieve stress, find happiness, and love. ‘Many’ is the key. People today want many ways and many options. One only has to drive down the shopping area of a town to see this in play. Many, many, many options in many, many, many areas of life and this spells trouble for those who proclaim the Gospel of Jesus.

Jesus made it very clear that the way to salvation is narrow;

““Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7:13‬ ‭

Jesus was proclaiming that not many options exists for salvation- in fact, He also tells us there is but ONE way;

“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John‬ ‭14:6‬ ‭

To a world that wants many options this notion is repulsive. It angers many and many try to teach things like;

‘There are more than one way to God.’

‘We all follow the same God in the end.’

‘In the end we all will go to Heaven anyway.’

Why does the world reject what is narrow minded and why do we, as Christians, get defensive when accused of being narrow minded? I need to thank Billy Graham for a devotional that made me wonder this. After all we not only accept some narrow minded things in life, but even demand narrow mindedness.

If you get on a plane heading to Hawaii on vacation I would think you would want the pilot to be narrow minded on going to Hawaii.

What if you have a tumor and need surgery to remove it. Do you want a surgeon who is open minded and thinks it’s ok to try shooting the tumor out instead? No! You want the narrow minded approach of surgically removing it.

We have seen the police come under fire recently, why? Because it is perceived they are open minded in how they handle who they arrest and with what type of force they use. They want them to be narrow minded in only arresting guilty people and with limited force.

When you think of it everyone is expected to be narrow minded everyday. If you drive, you can only drive on one side of the road. If you go to the store you must be narrow minded in that you have to pay before leaving. I’m sure everyone who works has to be narrow minded in job tasking, students are expected to be narrow minded and not do math in English class.

Back to Jesus. Perhaps instead of crying out that it’s not right for Jesus to claim He’s the only way we should actually be grateful God even provided a way in the first place! He did because He loves us;

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”

‭‭John‬ ‭3:16‬ ‭

So let’s accept that there is only one way and be grateful we do have a way. It is amazing grace that gave us the way we have and all we have to do is reach out to Jesus. Go ahead and accept the narrow minded and realize it’s a good thing.
