Today is April 1st- April Fool's Day. This is a day to watch out for fake news (well faker than normal), fake statements, fake announcements, and personal jokes. It is a day we try to do something to get someone to believe something untrue. Sadly, many preachers and organized church leaders will continue as business as usual because they are fooling Believers every day. It has been this way from the very beginning:

O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? 2 This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? Gal 3:1-3

Is this not clear to us that the gospel of religion- preached by the vast majority, is like an evil spell? Paul tells us that we, who are Saved by grace, shouldn’t adhere to the idea of perfecting our flesh by our efforts. The gospel of religion has fooled many and here is the most foolish of ideas that many have fallen for.

1) That we can lose our Salvation unless we work to keep it.

2) That God sent His Son because of love but wants us to still be in a relationship built on fear and obligation- one of conditions just as it was under the Law of Moses.

3) That Jesus did just enough for us to be Saved but not everything we needed to live an abundant life based on faith in Christ alone.

4) That we were forgiven when we were Saved of only the sins we committed up unto Salvation. From that point we still need to ask for forgiveness every time we sin.

5) That we can break our relationship with God or damage it due to our sin.

6) That we must adhere to every Word Jesus said and apply them directly (seemingly except for when He said to pluck our eyes and cut off hands so we can’t sin).

7) That we must work FOR God- our efforts in our own strength are important as we must try our best to not sin and do things FOR God.

8) That we need only to be forgiven to be Saved by trusting Jesus for that forgiveness. The fact we need to be made clean by the Righteousness of Jesus (Justification) is ignored or mentioned only in passing as a part of Sanctification.

9) That we don’t have a very special and incredible identity in Christ (i.e. we are sinners, saved by grace).

10) That the Law of Moses is still in effect for Believers- just not every one of the 613 Laws.

I am sure there are more we could state but these are a powerful set of foolish things being taught- that has bewitched many Believers. The fact so many Believers can’t see the truth through these foolish teachings shows just how strong the teachings are that tickle the ears of the listeners:

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 2 Tim 4:3-4

If you have been fooled by these things, perhaps this April Fool's Day you can become wise and open your heart to the truth. Open your heart to the truth and the Holy Spirit- the gift of truth in our hearts, will show you how not to be fooled by man’s doctrine and turn to God’s doctrine- the Gospel of Grace.
