Asa, Who?

6.28.2021

The Bible is full of wonderful characters. Some are great and well known like Paul, Joseph, David, and Moses. Other characters are evil like Goliath and Herod. So many characters with great impacts, and yet, we have characters who are little known, but still people we can learn from.

After the two great kings of Israel, David and Solomon, Israel had many other kings and one was Asa. He was one of the few kings that had his good moments and his bad moments.

At his best King Asa idol worship happening in Israel and even removed his own mother as Queen because of her personal involvement with Idols. Yet, for all this good he stopped short on getting rid of all the pagan temples and towards the end of his life, sadly, he turned away from God.

For his ups and downs King Asa did give one of the best prayers when facing an overwhelming enemy army;

“And Asa cried to the Lord his God, “O Lord, there is none like you to help, between the mighty and the weak. Help us, O Lord our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this multitude. O Lord, you are our God; let not man prevail against you.”” 2 Chronicles‬ ‭14:11‬ ‭

This simple, but effective prayer, led to the mighty hand of God moving;

“So the Lord defeated the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah, and the Ethiopians fled. Asa and the people who were with him pursued them as far as Gerar, and the Ethiopians fell until none remained alive, for they were broken before the Lord and his army. The men of Judah carried away very much spoil. And they attacked all the cities around Gerar, for the fear of the Lord was upon them. They plundered all the cities, for there was much plunder in them.” 2 Chronicles‬ ‭14:12-14‬

I believe we can learn four things from this prayer:

  1. We need to have absolute confidence in God

  2. We need to have absolute commitment to God

  3. We need absolute courage

  4. We need absolute concern for God

Let’s break down this prayer this week and see what we can gain from this prayer of this little known character named Asa.

Prayer focus: for believers to have total faith in God when facing the enemy.
