Always Thankful

“in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” I Thessalonians‬ ‭5‬:‭18‬

As we celebrate Thanksgiving Day we often focus on the obvious things to be thankful for- a home, hopefully good health, a job, family, friends, etc.  For most, Thanksgiving Day is an easy day to display thankfulness, but we are to always be thankful… for EVERYTHING!

How can we possibly be thankful for bad things like disease, brokenness, heartache, problems, and struggles?  I believe the answer lies in where our faith is.  When we place our total faith in Christ we can be thankful, even in the bad things.  After all, isn’t true faith displayed when it is kept in the worst of times?

Faith in Christ keeps our eyes on Him;

“If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.” Colossians‬ ‭3‬:‭1‬-‭4‬

Looking to Christ keeps our focus on the eternal perspective.  It reminds us that this world is temporary and so are the bad things.   That alone is something to be thankful for- this world of pain and agony will end!  But, there is one other thing that helps us be thankful, even in the bad times;

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭28‬ ‭

Oh, is our God a great God! He can take whatever we face and use it for His glory.  We can be thankful that our sufferings are God’s tool to bless others with the knowledge of His greatness.  What we face He takes and uses it- which means He uses us!  The God of the universe uses us to bring glory to Himself.  Now that is also a reason to be thankful for the trials we face.

Today, maybe thankfulness is easy, but tomorrow you will struggle.  Be thankful anyway.  If you are struggling with being thankful for the things you are enduring then simply ask God to help- and He will;

“Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” Romans‬ ‭8‬:‭26‬ ‭

Happy Thanksgiving, and this year I challenge you to pick one place you are struggling with and apply the above to turn it to something you are thankful for.

Prayer focus: for those who are alone today and our troops away protecting our nation.
